How to get students to focus on details

  1. In order to get students to focus on details I would encourage you to use the social learning theory. I would suggest that students work in groups of 2 or 3 and discuss the image. Then share their group thoughts with the whole class and give praise (behaviorism) to the students who discuss detail. This would condition students to give more detailed answers. Then ask students to write after small group and large group discussion. Provide this scaffolding and slowly remove the assistance each time you ask students to describe art. Have fun!!

  2. I too like the idea of using social learning to help your students find the details. When students can discuss their ideas they will then be able to look at the picture from a different point of view. You could also have your students draw pictures of their own and discuss their own details. This might be a good way to re-teach the idea of details. A great anticipatory set would be to have the class discuss a picture as a whole and write down all the details they see on the board.
